On the topic of trying to find a USEFUL use for AI Coders, I wondered why we didn't have a Code Converter/Debugger/Explainer. For one thing, we have so much code built in problematic idioms, wouldn't it be so nice to point AI at your git repo and say "rewrite this old BASIC app in Go"?
And it turns out there is such a service, and it's a free one:

The anti-lab-grown-meat movement is about conservative cultural insecurity — the fear that, without the force of law, some conservative cultural norms will fade away…
This is the real fear
— not of lab-grown meat itself, but of the changing culture its popularity would represent.
Whether conservatives find the meat substitute to be adequate is beside the point.
Society would have decided that some of their most cherished beliefs can be disposed of.
Both humankin…

Soooo....I'm doing a thing...🤭😏
As a lot of you know, Tooters shut down recently and the way it was handled in the end is regrettable.
However, I felt for longest time while it was up, that it was consistently one of the BEST run instances on Fedi with how they protected their users from some of the insanity that happens here.
That being said, with Tooters being gone, it leaves a bit of a hole in my Fedi heart and I know a lot of others as well.
So, I'm creating a new, very limited for now, politically-light (as little politics as possible locally), AI friendly (AI art welcome), Sharkey instance for some folks within my circle that I've grown to consider my friends.
The Social Zone is meant to be a place to escape the very political society we currently all live in and just be social with one another about our hobbies, interests, and day to day lives.
I'm still working out all the details but when I launch it, it's going to be invite only because I'm new to something like this and I want to get it right. Especially because those I will invite are people that are close to me and I don't want to disappoint them.
Depending on how things go for the next few months, including if I can even get this thing started correctly, I MIGHT be open to allowing more members in, down the line.
But, this is just getting started. I registered the domain yesterday and just started researching Sharkey today and how hard it would be to spin something up. Then, of course, there's configuration settings and administration with Sharkey that I have to familiarize myself with.
All in all, I'm very nervous, but excited that I decided to take this next step in my Fedi adventure and hope to eventually "give back" to the entire community, the same positive energy that you've all given me over the past wonderful year of being on this amazing platform.
Please do not ask for invites. I will not be handing them out anytime soon. I've already asked about 5 of you along with some IRL folks and I feel I would like some time to get this right for them first.
Thanks for reading. I hope you understand why I'm choosing to do this and hope you're as excited as me to see where things can go and understand why I feel it's important to have these types of "politically-light" spaces so people can escape such topics from time to time.
Keep on keeping on, Fedi. The future is bright and I'm ready to learn along with you. More info about TheSocial.Zone coming soon!
Your friend,
B.A.

3. Is she talking *to* or *about* Parker?
And I only started taking pics at the end…

Reggie went back into the bathroom; Parker went to ask the bartender. Draughn stood with Amy, Max, and Reggie, then started moving around the room. Finding the body would look sudden and unintentional, he decided. He found the little closet.
"I don't think you have motive to kill me," Mallory said. "Although sometimes people kill when someone gets too close to the truth." She stood up and dropped Amy's hand. "Dammit. I had to talk to someone. And you're the only one who gets the a Parker thing."
"I still can't believe you could think that one of your oldest friends could do that. I can't believe that you'd drop that bomb on Parker and then leave him alone."
Mallory stood up, feeling a thousand years old. "These are reasons why I …
"Third, when the Cuckoos came to protect you, they left Amy alone and stung Draughn. I thought they left her alone because she was your sibling and an honorary member of the hive, but I don't think it had anything to do with her. Draughn was the murderer, and Parker thought he was in danger as well, so they swarmed to protect him, but they also attacked the person they thought was attacking one of their own. They've known all along who did it."
"I still don't know-" Parker said.

I'm rereading Wilkie Collins chronologically and these days I'm on The Moonstone. A great deal of the plot hinges on various members of the gentry being deeply in debt. Despite the fact that all the laws, all their violent enforcement, are in their favor, after all, they write the laws, they absolutely can't escape their debts without finding some way to pay them.
Their laws provide them with all their wealth through the violence of enclosure and slavery. They provide them with endless serfs,* servants, and employees by (a) making it illegal to be unemployed and (b) taking away every possibility of employment other than wage labor, and yet, even with their frictionless ability to legislate whatever they want they've given themselves no escape from debt other than payment or imprisonment. Why?
I can't think of any reason besides the stability of the capitalism they all rely on for their obscene wealth. Yes, they take everything from their slaves, their colonies, and their working class, but to be able to repudiate debts would take everything from the finance industry on which their wealth also depends. There'd be no one to sell to them. They'd have nothing to do with their money without the vast luxury economy which supplies everything that makes their wealth worthwhile.
So as a class from time to time they'd sacrifice some of their peers to the violence of law enforcement because it was necessary to save the whole system from collapse. But none of this adds up to a respect for the rule of law or a system of equality under the law, either of which would also cause collapse.
Capital's control over the social narrative was relatively primitive in the mid 19th century, and it's easy for us to spot the contradictions, but nothing's changed at its core. Even now the law applies to the ruling class as necessary to stabilize capitalism and to the working class, slaves, and colonial subjects as necessary to control and continue their violent exploitation. Things look a lot better now on the surface because they've had to evolve that way to preserve stability, not because anything is different in essence.
And for all that it's a really banging novel, highly recommended! This, along with The Woman In White and (my personal fave) No Name are just pure Victorian fun (bracketing the ocean of bloodthirsty imperialist capitalism on which their entire society floats, as does ours).

I have mentioned before that I dated someone in my 20s for seven years. Yes he told people that he only wanted me for one thing. As far as I know he had nothing he could share with people arguing that was all I was good for but I don't actually rule out that he wasn't enough of a creep to have that opportunity (and have heard some evidence he may have done that). So to let me explain, this is a Very Normal Typesetting task for a book. Make two column text, with an embedded figure. Keep the baseline rhythm uniform. That means the two columns next to each other will always have the same baselines.
Make the figure full column width.
Until this became available, I could not find a way to do this. It's a subtle reason that multicolumn layouts for text on the web never really took off. (horizontal scrolling and snapping is perhaps another reason, but the fact that it looked like crap is part of it.)
I've been hand-solving variations using context-specific hacks for my whole career: text under e-commerce product cards. Images on a product page with a caption with text next to them that don't have funky gaps where the text goes underneath. Images with captions inset in text, too. Marketing pages with two bits of copy next to each other.
Lack of little nuances like this is why the whole web lands on "well I guess we'll set it in 16 pixel Helvetica with one line margins between paragraphs”. It stifles making anything but Browser Default Text or variations on it look good.
Remember how fresh Medium looked when it came out? Even its relatively small shake-up of the dominant formula felt good. Of course now, big easy to read serifed type in a single column is the brand of "this is a newsletter”

Why does iTerm2 have >100MB in a frequently updated file named “restorable-state.sqlite” and should I just whack it and see if a smaller one gets created or exclude it from backups and let it be, which may mean growing without bound?

Some of you may have seen me researching online signing services yesterday, testing about five different services through their trial accounts. One of those companies just called me up(!) and wanted to book me in for a demo of their product.

I said I went with Docuseal because it’s open source and I have control over my own data as I can self-host. “Oh is that important to you, why?”, he asked. So I actually went on a rant about digital ethics, indieweb and how we are tracked whatever …

"""
The case of One Laptop per Child shows us why it is dangerous to ignore the origins of charisma: one risks being perpetually entranced by the newest charismatic technology. This is not to say that cultural change with a technology-centric project is impossible. Still, even more realistic reforms grounded in the realities of their intended beneficiaries sometimes have difficulty gaining broad popular support outside the school unless they add a charismatic gloss of rapid, revolutionary change.
This charismatic pressure can put even open-eyed reformers in a catch-22. They must promise dramatic results to gain the social and financial support for reforms, and then they must either admit to not achieving their goals or pretend that they did achieve them. Either way, funders will declare that the project is finished and withdraw financial support, and then researchers and other observers will begin to note the discrepancies between reformers’ promises and their own observations. Thus, projects that rely on charismatic technologies are often short lived; their resources are cut off before charisma recedes into the background and before the technology becomes part of everyday classroom experience. This catch-22 has dogged efforts for educational reform, development, and cultural change — especially those funded through grants or other short-term funding — for well over a century. As the technology community moves on to the next charismatic device without learning from its failures, this will continue to hamper the possibility of real, if incremental, change.
[…] After all, charisma is ultimately a conservative social force. Even when charismatic technologies promise to quickly and painlessly transform our lives for the better, they appeal precisely because they echo existing stereotypes, confirm the value of existing power relations, and reinforce existing ideologies. Meanwhile, they may divert attention and resources from more complicated, expensive, or politically charged reforms that do not promise a quick fix and are thus less charismatic.

Why we need to defend mental privacy. Why Putin killed Navalny. How many people have been killed by cars since their invention. The best way to spot an idiot. How democracies die. Like, Dude, you hate me and what I write and say, why do you spend your days telling others about it instead of doing something that's fun and enriching your life?

But that struggle also outlines an important fact about car-free urban areas—that once cities make the decision to reduce or remove cars, they rarely go back. No one I spoke to for this piece could name a recent sizable pedestrianization or traffic-reduction scheme that had been reversed once it had been given time to have an effect.

Anyway I have never regretted breaking up with him and the fact that so many people thought he was one of the good ones when we were dating is definitely part of why I hate on men so often

Ya know...I didn't think about it until now, but it's kinda wild that the BlueSky bridge was REQUIRED to be "opt-in" by a massive amount of Fedi which just runs like a normal instance runs.
However, we currently have the Momostr.pink relay that bridges to Nostr with no such "opt-in" ridiculousness and Nostr doesn't even have "deletes" at all. You post something, it's there. No going back.
I guess the....6 instances that block it felt the same as the folks that hated on the BlueSky bridge but they decided to use the actual tool they were allotted in every such case, the BLOCK button....
So, why is a Nostr, no delete, opt out bridge, more admissible than a BlueSky, normal deletes, opt out bridge?🤨
I am now more confused than ever about the mindsets of people here.
I genuinely want to know if there's a reason one should be allowed and not the other, if there is one...😬

I really hope we can get some good people from Threads to move over before Meta starts to do even more untrustworthy things.
Besides the absolutely absurdly move of following and pushing a fake"Fediverse" account that makes people think Fediverse is a single entity or organization, they've already started discussions about expansions to AP to allow platforms to support ads and other shitty ways of monetization.
Fedi needs to make money to survive, I know that. I am behind that, but ads are the shadiest of all the monetization methods because of tracking. Nobody wants to be tracked no matter how "innocent" their activities are.
They've been REALLY quiet since activating AP on their end in a seemingly bad faith move to make the Fediverse seem "useless and pointless to use" by forcing users to educate themselves on the Fediverse if they even know it exists while also making the option to turn it on obscenely hard to locate from normal use.
All in all, I'm VERY skeptical of Meta's intentions and don't really think they'll end up fully federating in the end becuase "why enable a feature that a wide number of our users think is a useless feature?". I feel right now is as far as they're gonna go with it, maybe worldwide, but still one way because that benefits them, not us, and they won't push a feature that people think is useless.
Obviously this is intentional bad faith tactics, but they still have time to prove me wrong and I really hope they do. I really really hope one day we get full federation, but I would be very delusional to have high hopes that such a thing will ever occur given this week's revelations.🤦‍♂️
